Reception Photos 2022-2023

Health week W/C 03.07.2023

This week has been health week in school. We have participated in lots of different sports such as Brazilian football, Zumba and dance. We have also enjoyed taking part in Sports Day. We had so much fun competing in our races with our friends. Throughout the week we have also been learning all about different ways in which we can maintain a healthy lifestyle. We have been sorting foods into healthy and unhealthy, we have also been participating in daily yoga exercises and ‘Joe wicks’ exercise videos. We enjoyed taste testing different fruits and using our senses to describe how they look, feel , taste and smell. We have also been continuing with our teeth brushing scheme to help maintain good oral hygiene. Reception have had so much fun taking part in all of the various activities throughout the week !

Beach Trip 28.06.2023

Reception enjoyed their Geography field trip to Roker Beach. We enjoyed creating observational drawings of the landmarks around us. We had fun playing games such as tag and football on the Beach with our friends. We made sandcastles and enjoyed mark making in the sand. After the Beach and our Lunch, we went to Roker park, we enjoyed exploring the park  and using our muscles to climb on the climbing frame. We all enjoyed the swing! when we returned to school we all had a special treat of ice pops what a lovely day we all shared together.

Under the Sea

This week Reception have been learning all about Sea creatures which live under the sea. We have also enjoyed taking part in our under the sea inspired Fathers day crafts and card making. We have been working hard in the maths area to explore different representations of numbers up to 10 such as ten frames, dice, numicon etc. We have also enjoyed various stories in the reading area such as ; Tiddler, The Fish who could wish and Rainbow fish. We have enjoyed creating sea creatures in the malleable area and using our fine motor skills to create patterns on the sea star. We are continuing with our topic ‘under the Sea’ in the upcoming weeks and are very excited for our beach trip next week !

Shakespeare Week 05.06.2023

This week has been Shakespeare week in school. Reception have been learning all about who William Shakespeare is and in particular focusing on his play ‘ The Tempest’ Throughout the week we have using the junk modelling to create our very own boats out of different materials and resources. We have been testing different materials to identify which materials float and which sink. We have enjoyed role playing and retelling the story in our pirate ship role playing area. We have been creating our very own treasure maps in the writing area. Reception have enjoyed exploring the pirate themed tuff tray and role playing with the pirate ships and characters in the small world. We enjoyed watching a production of the Tempest on BBC also !

Angela’s Ark 18.05.2023

Today Angela’s Ark visited Reception. We had lots of fun learning about different animals and talking about the mini beats we have looked at in our topic. We even got to hold a variety of animals such as spiders, tortoises, snakes , rabbits and a bearded dragon !

Mini Beasts W/C 08.05.2023

For the next three weeks Reception are learning all about Mini beasts. We have been learning all about the life cycle of a butterfly and working hard to sequence this cycle. We have also been creating detailed drawings of mini beasts looking at the different features they have. We have enjoyed exploring and hunting for mini beasts outside in the forest area and in our bug hotel. In Reception we have our very own caterpillars, they are currently in their chrysalis we are so excited to watch them transform into beautiful butterfly’s !

W/C 15.05.2023 – Our caterpillars have transformed into butterfly’s and we released them this week ! we have continued our learning about mini beasts and have enjoyed focusing on the books ‘ Super worm’ and ‘ The hungry caterpillar’. We have been working hard to sequence the stories and we have also been designing our very own mini beasts.

The King’s Coronation W/C 1.05.2023

This week In Reception we have been learning all about the Kings coronation. We have been researching lots of interesting facts about the Kings coronation and have learnt a lot about the King and his life. We enjoyed writing coronation invitations and shopping lists for our party. We also enjoyed painting and decorating our very own crowns which we wore to our party. We had lots of fun posing on the throne and playing games such as pin the crown on the king , castle bean bag throwing etc. We also had afternoon tea with all our class friends and teachers. We even made the food ourselves! We enjoyed baking biscuits and making jam, ham, and cucumber sandwiches. We have enjoyed making our own castles in the Junk modelling and making coronation cakes and crowns in the playdough. In the home corner, small world, and construction area we have been building our own castles and role playing within the castle dressing up as royalty and hosting our very own party. What a fun week we have all had !

Growing week 2 W/C 24.04.2023

This week Reception have still been focusing on the topic ‘Growing’ whilst looking at the two traditional tales ‘ Jack and the Beanstalk’ and ‘ The Enormous Turnip’. We have been focusing on which fruits and vegetables grow above and which ones grow below the ground. We have been taste testing different fruits and using our senses to describe them. we have enjoyed exploring the provision and using the story telling figures to retell the story of ‘ Jack and the Beanstalk’. We have also enjoyed playing in the gardening area outside to dig up our vegetables and sorting them into groups.

Growing W/C 17.04.2023

This week Reception have been learning all about Growing. We have been discussing and learning all about what plants need to grow and survive. We have also been drawing and painting detailed pictures of plants and carrying out observational paintings and drawings. We have researched and worked hard to learn all about the different features of a plant. We have been exploring real plants within the tuff tray and looking at the different parts of it such as its roots.

Our Easter workshop

We had an Easter workshop in school ! Our grown ups came into School and took part in lots of Easter themed activities with us. We made Easter cards, bunny rabbit head bands, we decorated biscuits and we also made an Easter Wreath. It was so much fun we all enjoyed it very much !

The Easter Disco

We had so much fun at our Eater Disco with all of our friends and teachers. We played games and enjoyed dancing and singing with everyone. We really enjoyed our party snacks and sweets at the Disco.

Easter

In Reception we have been learning all about the Easter story and different traditions around this celebration. We enjoyed taste testing the hot currant buns and learning all about the traditions around Easter such as Easter eggs, wearing of the Easter Bonnet, egg hunts, decorating eggs, decorating your home. We had so much fun on our very own egg hunt which we had in our school yard. In school we also had chicks and Ducks visiting we really enjoyed cuddling and holding them.

Down on the Farm

In Reception we have been learning all about the Farm. We have been looking at the different animals that live on the farm focusing on their habitats, their features and the produce they make. We have also been focusing on animals and their offspring. We have been recapping job roles and learning about the importance of the Farmer and their responsibilities.

World book day 03.03.2023

Today we celebrated World Book Day. We loved all the costumes and reading lots of different stories. We have been discussing our outfits in key groups, designed our own book covers about our characters and coloured in our own book marks. We enjoyed talking about different authors and why we enjoy reading.

Shrove Tuesday

We have been learning about why we have a pancake day and how we make them. This morning we helped Mrs Hewitt to follow some instructions to make pancakes, and we learnt about the ingredients we use and how to cook them. In literacy we discussed how the pancakes were made and worked hard to correctly order the instructions by cutting and sticking them in the correct sequence thinking about what comes first, next and finally.

Real life Super Heroes w/c 06.02.2021

Over the last two weeks in Reception we have still been learning all about real life Superheroes. These are people that help us in our community. We have had a visit from Sarah and Juliet our Community Police Officers. They told us all about the very important jobs they have to do to keep us all safe and help us in our community. We learnt all about the equipment they carry to keep them safe, the different types of jobs they do and we got to have a go of the police radio and held Sarah’s jacket, which was very heavy!

We have being learning all about what a question is and we have been trying hard to use our questioning words to think of lots of different questions to ask the Police Officers on their visit.

Over the last two weeks our Role play area has been set up as a Police Station, fire station and a bakery. We have had lots of fun pretending to be real life superheroes in this area.

In Maths we have counted the correct amount of Firefighters to go into their Fire engine and used Police Officers and their cars to help us with our Number bonds to 5.

We have really enjoyed learning all about real life superheroes and the jobs they do to help us.

Real life Super Heroes w/c 30.01.2023

This week in Reception we have learning all about real life Superheroes. These are people that help us in our community. We have had a visit from Sarah the paramedic who told us all about her very important job and showed us her uniform that Paramedics wear so we can recognise them.  We thought of lots of different questions to ask her.

We talked about what an emergency is and when we should call for ambulance, firefighter or police and the number we should ring. We know that we never ever ring 999 if there is not an emergency situation.

We had lots of fun visiting our vet and doctor’s surgery in our role play area. We dressed up as Doctors and vets and help to make our friends and animals better in Reception. We learnt about all the different equipment doctors and vets use to make us feel better. To used this new vocabulary when we were playing in the role play area.

We have talked about the jobs we would like to do when we are grown up and also the jobs people do in our families.

Chinese New Year 23.01.2023

This week in Reception we have learning all about Chinese New Year. We found China on the world map and talked about the size of the country, the different transport we could use to get there and if it was hot or cold there. We then listen to the story of Chinese New Year and worked in pairs to name all the different animals in the race, cut them out and then use positional language to place them correctly onto a picture of the river. We now know that this year is the year of the rabbit and we made our own rabbit or dragon by carefully cutting around a template and then sticking all the pieces together in the correct order and on the correct part of the  animals body. We talked about the traditions of Chinese New Year and how families celebrate it. We thought that some the traditions were the same as when we celebrate Christmas, like cleaning and decorating the house and wearing new clothes and eating a special meal with the family.

Winter w/c 16.01.2023

This week we have continued learning all about the season Winter. We have discussed and recapped different countries and their climates, and seasonal change. We have also had discussions about the cold weather and the effect on the environment/people. This week we have been focusing on changes in matter. We have been exploring and experimenting with ice and learning all about melting and freezing. We were also very lucky as it snowed this week ! we had lots of fun exploring and playing in the snow.

Winter w/c 09.01.2023

This week Reception have been focusing on the topic of ‘Winter’. We have been looking at the different countries and their climate , we have also been discussing seasonal change and in particular focusing on animals and their habitats also the clothing we wear during the Winter season. We have been comparing the seasons Summer and Winter and completed a sorting activity in which we sorted and placed the items of clothing into the correct Season. We used Google Earth to locate different countries on the map and discussed the similarities and differences between cold and hot countries. We researched which animals live in these countries and discussed their habitats.

Our First week back w/c 04.01.2023

This week we have been thinking about goals and resolutions for the New Year. We all talked about what we would like to accomplish this year and made a wishing wand to help us achieve these goals. We took time to talk about what we had done over the Christmas holidays and enjoyed exploring the environment.

A visit from the Dentist

This week we had a visit from the Dentist! She came in and asked us lots of questions about how we keep our teeth healthy. We learned about how important it is to brush our teeth 2 times a day, on a morning after our breakfast and on a night before bed. We learned that this helps to stop nasty cavities! We talked about what foods are healthy to eat for our teeth and bodies and what foods aren’t healthy and why. We identified that we should drink water and milk rather than fizzy pop, and as a snack we should eat fruit rather than sweets or chocolate. The dentist showed us how we should clean our teeth and how important it is to clean our gums. We even had a practice at the front using the big teeth and toothbrush, and got to dress up as a dentist.  We got to meet the dentists mascot and clean her teeth too! She also taught us lots about keeping our teeth healthy and clean.  We are ready to start brushing our teeth in school now using our new toothbrush and our toothbrush train!.

Homework Heroes

This half term we have been learning all about festivals and celebrations. Well done to all of those children who completed some homework tasks and to those who completed all 6 pieces of homework , fantastic effort well done !

Christmas in Reception

We have been getting ready for Christmas in reception over the last few weeks.  We have been making Christmas cards, reindeer dust, calendars and some hot chocolate cones!  We have been exploring our Christmas provision and role playing with the wrapping paper, making presents for each other.  We have been dressing up as elves and Santa Claus and posting cards in our [post box. We have been engaging in some Christmas maths in the maths area, adding baubles to the tree and counting them. In the reading area we have enjoyed reading some Christmas stories. In the playdough we have enjoyed creating and decorating baubles using cutters with lots of sequins and glitter! In the writing area we have enjoyed writing Christmas cards for our friends and family. We enjoyed coming to school in our Christmas jumpers for Christmas jumper day and we loved having our Christmas dinner with our teachers.

Pyjama Day

Today we came into school dressed in our warm cosy pyjamas for a Christmas film day! We designed our own pair of pyjamas, our own snow globe and played a matching pyjama game with our friends.  We watched some Christmas films and enjoyed some warm hot chocolate and some popcorn too! We had so much fun.

Christmas Party Day

This week we had our Christmas party and it was so much fun! We came into school dressed in our fantastic party clothes. We went up to the hall where we danced with all of our friends and teachers to the music. We played some party games such as musical statues, musical bumps and corners. We won prizes  for the best dancers and winners of each game. After our party we enjoyed some party food together at the table where we sat and talked and laughed with our friends. We had so much fun and we are so excited for Christmas.

The Christmas Pantomime

We were so lucky this week we had our Christmas pantomime to watch in school! We got to meet Santa’s elf and watched the show with our family. Before the show we made out own sweet bags to take with us. We put in some chocolate coins, marshmallows, biscuits and a candy cane. We designed our name to stick on the front. We really enjoyed sharing these with our family who came in to watch with us. We got all cosy and sat on the blankets and cushions. We all laughed so much and even got to join in at the front!

The Christmas Story

This week we have been learning all about the Christmas Story, the Nativity. We learned about Christianity and all about who Jesus is and why he is so important to Christians. We learned that this is the reason we celebrate Christmas. We read the story and identified key characters and recalled main events. For example the visit from the angel, shepherds and three kings. In the provision we used lots of different props to act out the story in the reading area and In the role play we dressed up as the characters. We learned lots of new language such as stable and manger. In the construction, creative and playdough areas we made some stables for the baby Jesus. We also looked at the different animals that were present in the story and used these to do some counting in the maths area. 

Our Trip to the Church

Reception have been on a trip to The Holy Trinity Church. We had so much fun learning all about Advent and the preparations within the church for Christmas celebrations. We had so much fun discussing the Nativity story and dressing up in Nativity costumes. We enjoyed singing Christmas songs and playing with all the toys they had laid out for us. We learned all about the colours used and worn in the church and what they represent.

The World Cup

This week we are celebrating the world cup 2022! We are supporting our country, England! We learned all about what the world cup is and when it happens. We learned all abut the country of Qatar, including where the country is and what it is like there. We looked at how it is different to our country and compared things such as weather, location on the globe and what clothes people wear. We made lots of flags to hang up in our classroom including the flags of all of the country’s taking part! We made some big England flags in the creative area. In PE this week we practiced our skills with the ball, dribbling and kicking. We enjoyed playing some ball games. We enjoyed playing with the finger gym football, using our fingers in the football boot to try and kick the ball into the goal. We also enjoyed cutting out own team player and using our fingers to try and kick the football on the pitch we made. We are looking forward to watching our country play in the world cup and we are cheering for them, come on England! 

Children In need 2022

This week we took part in Children In need and we came into school on Friday dressed up in our Pudsey bear clothes. We learned all about what this means and why it is such an important charity. We donated money for children in need and went up to the hall where we played games, won prizes and enjoyed decorating and eating a biscuit.  We designed Pudsey’s bandana and enjoyed lots of colouring and art and craft activities throughout the day. On the afternoon we had a special visit from Pudsey Bear himself! He came in to say hello and gave us all a big cuddle. This was such a special treat! 

Nursery Rhyme week W/C 14.11.2022

This week we took part in Nursery rhyme week. We focused on a different nursery rhyme each day. We looked at ‘5 Little Speckled Frogs’,  ‘1,2,3,4,5’, ‘BINGO’ and ‘Twinkle Twinkle’ and ‘The Big ship’. Each day we created a craft for the nursery rhyme and added it to a headband that we made. Each day we sang our song with our headband on and recorded it and by the end of the week our headband was full!  We had fun exploring nursery rhymes in the reading area, and using props to sing with. We enjoyed doing some counting in the maths area with a focus on 5 little speckled frogs. In the playdough we enjoyed creating each day e.g. making stars, fish or frogs!.  We enjoyed singing and dancing and moving to the rhythm. We had a fantastic nursery rhyme week

Odd Sock Day 2022

Reception enjoyed taking part in odd sock day as part of Anti- bullying week in school. We have been learning about how we can be kind to others and discussing how we are all unique and different. On odd sock day we celebrate what makes people unique, we learned all about what a bully is and how we should always treat people with respect and kindness.

Remembrance Day 2022

We have been learning all about Remembrance Day and why this is important to us. We have been learning about all of the people who fought in the wars for us, and paying our respects to the people and animals who died. We have been creating in the art and writing area, designing poppy’s both red and purple. We have been creating poppy’s in the playdough using resources and even making some cenotaph’s! We have been counting poppy’s in the maths area and matching numeral to quantity. We have been designing medals for the soldiers and exploring the role play and small world areas. We have been learning all about the poppy and why this is significant.

Outdoor learning day 03.11.2022

We had so much fun on outdoor learning day, we have been using the chalks outside to draw pictures of fireworks and Rangoli patterns. We also made Rangoli patterns in the sandpit. We have been playing in the water and exploring in the forest area. We had a number hunt in the sandpit and also a letter hunt in the forest. We have been making Diya lamps in the mud kitchen and also preparing food in the mud kitchen to have a Diwali celebration with our friends around the table. We used the costumes and musical instruments to dress up and rein act some of the Diwali traditions we have been learning about.

Festivals of light

Diwali

Reception have been learning all about the Hindu Festival Diwali. We have been making our very own Rangoli patterns in the glitter sand using tools such as paintbrushes and forks. We have also been making our very own Diya lamps using coloured salt dough and decorative materials such as glitter, beads and sequins. We looked at the special clothing wore when celebrating Diwali and the preparations and traditions that Diwali entails. We learned about the Gods and Goddesses that Diwali is associated with such as Lakshmi, Rama and Sita.

Bonfire Night

Reception have been learning all about Bonfire night and the history of the celebration. We learned about the story of Guy Fawkes and the houses of parliament. We have been creating our very own firework pictures using chalk, paints, coloured pens and pencils. We have been watching videos of fireworks and discussing their appearance and the sounds they make. We also discussed how we could stay safe when we are around fire and fireworks during celebrations.

Halloween 31.10.2022

Today we have been celebrating Halloween by taking part in a range of Halloween themed activities and learning all about the history of the festival. We have been collaging pumpkins, reading Halloween stories and taking part in Halloween themed number activities. We have been drawing and colouring different Halloween pictures and dressing up in the role play area.

Money Day 21.10.2022

In school we took part in a money themed maths day to help raise money for the charity Brysons animal shelter . We learned all about the English Currency and it’s value. We made bird feeders in class and then sold them to each other in our pet shop to help raise funds for the Shelter. We explored real money in our snack area which we turned into a snack shop for the day. We enjoyed taking on the role of a shop keeper and paying for our snack.

Homework Heroes

Reception have been working hard on their homework this half term which was based all around the topic of ‘Me on the map’. Well done to all of the children who completed some homework tasks and a huge well done to those who completed all six ! You are all homework Heroes !

Learning all about Autumn W/C 17.10.2022

This week we have been learning all about the different seasons with a particular focus on the season Autumn. We explored natural resources which we collected such as leaves and conkers and used these to take part in counting activities and creating Autumn art. We explored in the Autumn inspired tuff tray with the pine cones, conkers and leaves thinking about the appearance and the texture of the objects. We learned about Hibernation and the different habitats which the animals hibernate in. We observed the change in the state of the trees and flowers during the Autumn season and compared this to Spring and how the temperature has changed .

Local landmarks W/C 10.10.2022

This week Reception have been learning all about local landmarks in Sunderland. We have been building models of the landmarks in both the construction and playdough area. We have also been drawing pictures of the different landmarks. We enjoyed looking at the different landmarks on google Earth and discussing which landmarks we have seen and visited.

Space week -03.10.2022- 07.10.2022

This week we have been learning all about space. We have been taking part in space counting activities and building rocket ships. We have enjoyed learning all about the different planets and life on earth. Together we made our own model of earth and have been creating space pictures in the creative area. We have also been learning about and researching astronauts, we watched videos and read books all about space. We have had so much fun this week !

Houses

In Reception we have been learning all about houses, including rooms within the house and different types of houses. We have enjoyed role playing in the home corner and building models of houses in the construction area. We have been using our counting and number recognition skills to take part in topic related maths activities. We have also enjoyed manipulating the playdough to create models of houses. We have created pictures of our homes and have enjoyed discussing our homes and families with our class friends.

Settling into Reception

We have enjoyed meeting all of our new teachers and classmates in Reception. We have also enjoyed exploring both the indoor and outdoor provision. Reception have had so much fun role playing in our sweet shop, junk modelling in the creative area. Drawing, colouring and painting pictures. We have also had so much fun playing in the small world and construction area as well as playing in the malleable area and maths area. We love learning outdoors and playing on the bikes and in the mud kitchen. We love exploring in the Forest area and playing in the water area.

Our first day in Reception 06.09.2022

We have had so much fun on our first day of Reception , we cannot wait for a year full of learning and fun !
