History

Welcome to History at Southwick Community Primary School!

Our aim here at Southwick is to engage our pupils with a relevant, exciting and challenging History curriculum which inspires children’s curiosity and understanding about the life of people who lived in the past. Children investigate these past events and, by so doing, develop the skills of enquiry, analysis, interpretation and problem-solving. Our pupils develop an understanding of how events in the past have influenced our lives today preparing them for an adult life in the 21st century.

At our school, every year group studies a local history unit to help children develop a strong sense of identity, belonging and pride in their community. By exploring the rich history of Sunderland and the surrounding area, pupils make meaningful connections between local, national and global history while developing key historical enquiry skills.

We encourage visits to places of historical interest and also visitors in school to help ignite children’s curiosity about the past and to help secure a greater depth of understanding.
