Hello and welcome to the wonderful world of maths here at Southwick Primary. Here you will be able to see the range of mathematical opportunities our children are exposed to each and every day, inspiring our young learners to have a passion for maths. At Southwick we have two maths leads; Mrs Mahone (Year 3 teacher, Lower Key Stage 2 Phase Lead) and Mrs Magrath (Year 1 teacher, Key Stage 1 lead).
We oversee the fabulous work carried out each and every day and embed an ethos of over-learning, revisiting and reapplying knowledge and skills, creating well equipped mathematicians who are resilient and LOVE a problem.
We understand the importance of maths within everyday life and like to unpick any opportunity within all aspects of our school day to develop or embed a skill with purpose and meaning.
Taking maths outdoors had allowed learners to engage in tasks in a kinaesthetic way using natural resources to support teaching skills as well as specific maths equipment.
Within Southwick, we follow ‘The Essentials Curriculum’ breaking down concepts into three key milestones. All staff use these to inform and support planning, fostering a progressive and skill based curriculum.
We use ‘Times Table Rockstars’ throughout school to support our children’s fluency work with tables. This can be accessed at home so please encourage your child where applicable to log in and have some fun embedding their table’s knowledge.
